“It's important for us to send a message to Alaska kids now,” Smith said. “We want you to play here. It's important you play here.” Read more...

Two recognized by NHL Central Scouting

North American Hockey League

Two North American Hockey League players were recognized by the NHL Central Scouting Bureau on its final rankings for 2007 draft-eligibles released on April 25.

Texas defenseman Brad McCabe is listed at No. 199 overall among North American skaters, while St. Louis forward Pat Maroon is ranked at No. 208.

A University of Alaska-Anchorage recruit, McCabe, who started the season with the Alaska Avalanche, finished the regular season with 21 goals for 36 points in 42 games. Maroon, who is headed to Ferris State University next season, won the NAHL's scoring title this year with 95 points (40 goals) in 57 games.

Former NAHL players ranked include forward Andrew Conboy (Wichita Falls), who is listed at No. 149, and Carter Camper (Cleveland Jr. Barons), who is at No. 200.

The final ranking features the top 210 skaters and 30 goaltenders in North America and top 175 skaters and 16 goaltenders from Europe.

In its 31st year of operation, the NHL Central Scouting Service provides scouting and evaluation of draft-eligible players to NHL member clubs. Headed by Director of Central Scouting E.J. McGuire, NHL Central Scouting employs nine full-time and six part-time scouts throughout North America and works with Goran Stubb of the European Scouting Service and his staff of five full-time scouts to cover prospects playing throughout Europe. Combined, the NHL Central Scouting and European Scouting Service will have seen in excess of 3,000 games this season.
